The Japan Open Golf Championship for the disabled is only full scale golf tournament for the disabled in Japan. It is 36 hole stroke play(scratch tournament).
The Championship started in 1996. This year, we will have 24th anniversary.
Around 80 players from all over Japan and several players from overseas participate every year.
Players compete in 8 divisions : (1)upper limb disability, (2)lower limb disability, (3)multiple disability, (4)mild disability, (5)wheel chair, (6)mental disability, (7)people recovered from stroke,(8)Grand Prix(overall division,players under official handicap 15 are eligible).
Each division has to have participation of at least 5 participants to hold competition. Top three players of each division will be awarded. The winner of the Grand Prix division will be awarded as the Champion of Japan Open.
Before or after the welcome dinner,first-time participants will have an interview with classifiers so that they may be placed in the correct division.
Almost every year, organizer invite some excellent players from abroad. Recently invited players are Juan Postigo from Spain and Chad Pfifer from the USA.
They stimulated Japanese players’ motivation.They also played and competed eagerly with Japanese players.
From the beginning, Japan Golf Association(JGA) and Japan Para Sports Association(JPSA) have been supporting the championship to help expand disabled golf in Japan.
All the disabled golfers in the category above are welcome to join this Championship.
